In June 2015, FIRETOOLS students had the pleasure to present their work at 2nd European Symposium of Fire Safety Science. The event took place in European University Cyprus in Nicosia, Cyprus.
The conference schedule was divided into five topics:
– Fire Hazards with New Energy Carriers;
– Fire Suppression in Large Facilities;
– Probabilistic Structural Fire Engineering;
– Forest Fire Research;
– Fire Research for the Fire Service.

A relatively unusual format was chosen for the conference – poster sessions together with workshop/discussion sessions for each of the topic was held.
Karlis and Blanca presented their poster ’Uncertainties in material thermal modelling of fire resistance tests’ under the topic ’probabilistic structural fire engineering’. The study was carried out together with co-authors Nils Johansson and Patrick van Hees from Lund University.
The study addresses the issue of model application to real-life fire engineering problems, where the levels of input parameter uncertainties are determined by the nature of the materials (inhomogeneity, diversity in composition etc.), precision and accuracy of material property measurement techniques and the nature of the exposure conditions (heat flux to the material).
